SUBSTITUTE BUS DRIVER HOURLY RATE=$28/HR.
QUALIFICATIONS: The Substitute Bus Driver shall be a high school graduate and highly competent in the operation of school buses and passenger-carrying vans. Must possess a valid New Jersey school bus driver’s license (P&S Endorsement), class B preferred. Must be tactful and courteous with students, staff, and parents and yet have the ability to maintain sufficient discipline to guard the safety of passengers and to protect the vehicle against vandalism and other abuses. The Substitute Bus Driver must have his/her criminal background check on file and medical records must be current.
REPORTS TO: Business Administrator/Board Secretary or designee
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Substitute Bus Driver shall:
- Conduct a pre-trip safety inspection of the bus prior to every trip and completes the School Bus Condition Report.
- Notify Head Bus Driver of any mechanical malfunctions and/or safety hazards.
- Perform interior bus cleaning duties daily, cleans windows and exterior as needed, and refuels the vehicle.
- Participate in emergency evacuation drills in accordance with administrative code and board policy, and instructs passengers regarding safety regulations and other bus rules.
- Adhere to established routes, designated bus stops and keeps to assigned time schedule.
- Transport only authorized pupils and ensure that all students have left the bus at the end of the route.
- Obey all traffic laws and observe mandatory school bus safety regulations.
- Report all accidents and pupil injuries immediately to the principal and the school business administrator and complete required reports.
- If ticketed as a result of an accident or traffic stop by police, the Bus Driver will pay any fines and court costs, and will attend driving safety classes if so ordered by the municipal court judge.
- Not use a cell phone while the bus is turned on or in gear, either to receive calls or to make calls. Cell phone operation on a moving vehicle is against the law. Cell phone operation by a bus driver is only permitted if the bus is parked or at the roadside curb with the engine turned off and the bus out-of-gear.
- Shall perform other duties which may be necessary to ensure the proper functioning of the district buses and which are incident to the position of Bus Driver.
